Maestro John Angel, new online portrait workshop, August 2020 in association with BARA

I'm delighted to announce that the workshop which I had planned with Maestro John Angel WILL go ahead this summer, in spite of the global lockdown and lack of international travel.

Rather than taking place in my studio, we have worked together to create a fantastic new online programme, made up of beautifully edited demonstration videos, which will be shared with participants throughout the workshop, and Maestro will attend through Zoom every day, answering questions and doing more demonstrations where needed.

The subject is portraiture. Over the two weeks, the programme will allow you to complete at least three portraits, under Maestro's guidance. The first is using the Grisaille technique, the second and third are in colour. All reference material will be provided in advance, along with handout notes. You will be working from photographic reference selected by Maestro, and not painting master-copies.

Maestro will be in his studio in Florence, and the Zoom meetings will be hosted by me, in Belfast. To date (since lockdown took effect here), I have held 72 classes on Zoom, and am now very familiar with it as a platform. It is fantastic - but I have opted for mostly pre-recorded video demonstrations, rather than live demos, just in case anything goes wrong with anyone's internet during class.

Please watch the video below and get in touch if you would like to book. Details on fees etc at the bottom of this blog.

New Studio, new classes!

I'm thrilled to be able to share that I have moved into new studio space, in what until recently was a Primary School, and am shaping it up into a spacious, comfortable contemporary atelier environment. I found it at the beginning of April, and in three very busy weeks, with the help of lots of student volunteers, have made it feel like home.

The walk-in film was made after a couple of weeks, so things have moved a little further since, but it gives you an idea..!

The photos below show how the rooms were three weeks ago - huge, and looking like a primary school class room. Large, with potential...

But much work to be done. I started by removing everything from the walls, including hundreds of staples... and started painting.

After several days working on it, the heavy brigade arrived - my volunteer students, armed with tool boxes, and scrubbing brushes.

Lost count of the number of trips to Ikea...

Jim, modelling this year's best overalls...

After the furntiture was all assembled...

My turn, to get the curtains ready to block the south facing sunlight during classes
So, it's not finished yet - the easels room (which now includes a piano!) has yet to be painted, but I will keep going until all is done!

I am so grateful to all the volunteers, and may call on you again...!!

There will be two studio open evenings in June, and everyone is invited. I will keep you posted.

All my classes are now at the new venue and I now have space and easels to offer life drawing sessions. For details of upcoming workshops please email julie@juliedouglas.co.uk

This summer Belfast Academy of Realist Art is holding a variety of workshops with artists from around the world. The programme is designed to include workshops to suit all levels of experience - if you are unsure of your level, please just get in touch to be guided in the right direction.

July 1st-5th: Intensive drawing and oil painting workshop with Julie Douglas. This popular workshop takes you through the full process of making a painting - from planning your arrangements, drawing it, transferring onto canvas, colour mixing and painting. You will produce several studies during the week, in black and white as well as full colour. A lovely intensive hands-on workshop, fully tutored which will improve your confidence and provide you with new skills. We will work using still life subjects and include looking at flesh tones if time permits. Cost £575 which includes all materials and lovely home-made lunch. 10am-5pm.

August 13th-17th: Drawing, composition and colour mixing: your foundation to successful painting with Julie Douglas. This workshop is designed to help your drawing skills in order to improve your paintings. Many people have doubts about their drawing skills, and prefer to go straight to paint. This doesn't pay off in the long run; students quickly find that their lack of drawing is holding them back. When we paint, we use our 'drawing eyes' regarding placement, proportion, relative values, composition, gesture, and balance. When we paint, we need to have our attention on the colour and mixing; if we can't draw, our attention is seriously diverted, so painting becomes more frustrating and seemingly mysterious!

This is the perfect lead into Mr Angel's workshop (see below), or any world-class atelier-based masterclass. Cost: £500 which includes some materials. A list will be provided upon booking.
